Highs & Lows

  • The recently opened Hotel Saint George stands at the site of the original Hotel Saint George built in 1886. The updated architecture echoes Donald Judd’s minimalist aesthetic which defines Marfa style, setting the standard for this world-class contemporary art destination in West Texas.

  • The staff is friendly and local.

  • Upon arrival we were met by a stylish reception area and throughout the hotel you’ll find an excellent collection of paintings, sculpture and photography from world-class artists, both local and international.

  • Our suite, the Highland Suite, on the northwest corner, offered stunning views onto Highland Avenue looking out over the Marfa to the Chinati Mountains. The room was layered with personal touches like arts and objects made by local artists, from hand made wooden tables to the Mark Flood painting on our wall. Amenities include in-suite espresso, king size bed, an entertainment area with a large screen tv, luxurious, spa-like bathroom with walk-in shower and the Aesop bath products, and thick, heavy robes and towels.

  • The lobby hosts the fantastic Marfa Book Co. bookstore, offering a strong assortment of art, design and photography books as well as a selection of fine art editions by local artists or residents of the Chinati artists residency program.

  • The hotel now has a pool and lounge in a former train depot across the street. It wasn’t officially open when we were there, but it promises to be a perfect place to cool off after a day of hot and dusty excursions to Chinati and the various Donald Judd Foundation sites.

  • We were there off-season, but you are sure to spot art world luminaries at the Saint George during Marfa Art Week (September 22 - October 6). The bar is clearly a hot spot in Marfa after hours.

  • The pool wasn’t open yet.

Complimentary Illy coffee pods for the in-suite machine and mini-fridge.
