Lake Saint Clair, Australia
by: Caroline Clements
An adventurous long weekend to visit the deepest lake in Australia.

Perspective of the Pumphouse from on shore.
Entering room number 8 on the second floor of the Pumphouse with incredible views. Large windows make the rooms feel exposed but they are extremely private and sealed from the elements.
View from bed.
Some lovely details - the guest handbook with all the information you will need, including the number to dial for hot bread delivered to your room.
Nice bathroom details - exposed pipes and taps + Aesop soap.
The honesty bar system in the dining room.
Enjoying the afternoon sun in one of the Pumphouse lounge room areas.
The gates will open slowly to slow your pace down on arrival.
Me outside the Pumphouse. There are 12 rooms inside that sit 250m out over a lake. Access is by foot or golf buggy.
Highs + Lows
Waking up over a misty lake. The location is so incredible, you’re out over a 170 meter deep lake (the deepest in Australia). The temperature can get very cool in Tasmania but the rooms as completely sealed.
The bathrooms. As well as floor heating, the showers at the Pumphouse have full-length windows looking out over the lake.
Hot bread can be delivered to your room at any time. Just call.
The living room areas with honesty bar. Pour yourself a drink and take some time in the afternoon sun to sit with a book and take in the incredible location.
This is a remote location, so it’s a journey to get there (2 hours from any major city with an airport), but that is the beauty of it.

Remote eco-hotel in a converted hydroelectric pump station over a lake.
Remote, serene luxury set in the World Heritage wilderness of Tasmania. Absolutely incredible. Very unique experience.
Blissfully off the grid in a remote part of Tasmania, sitting over Lake Saint Clair.
Total 18 - 12 in the Pumphouse and 6 in the Shorehouse.
The soundtrack to the movie The Lobster.

Have a communal dinner with the other guests at the hotel in the evening. It’s a delicious home-style meal made with local produce and love.
