AHL Insider:

Simon Warrington

  • WHAT DO YOU DO AND HOW DID YOU GET HERE?

I'm an English chap based in New York working as Marketing Director for a global hotel brand. I’m looking forward to editing the Culture section on AHL with reviews and previews of anything cultural connected to hotels (think events, residencies, performances, festivals, pop-ups, pop-ins….the more unique the better!).

  • WAS HOSPITALITY SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO DO? WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP?

I met an inspiring Creative Director at the Great Eastern Hotel in London who offered me a job. At the time he was working with Nan Goldin, Perou, James Murphy and Franko B - needless to say I was sold on joining. And growing up I wanted to be a rapper…

  • WHAT'S YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION?

Everyone at the forefront of counter culture globally and my life guide, www.thenuminous.net.

  • WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE HOTEL IN THE WORLD AND WHY?

Looking for a new favorite but it used to be Pikes in Ibiza. It felt alive and real. The legendary Tony Pike’s influence was all over the hotel, from the bar snacks to the garden design.

  • WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHANGE YOU'VE SEEN IN THE INDUSTRY IN THE PAST 5 to 10 YEARS?

Mobile over PC. It’s becoming the go to for hotel bookings and content sharing.

  • WHO ARE YOU CURRENTLY ADMIRING IN THE INDUSTRY AND WHY?

Interior design geniuses Roman and Williams. They work with people who share their vibe, collaborate among a vast group of stakeholders, and above all, maintain a sense of fantasy in each project (Ace, Boom Boom Room, Viceroy). I also respect any marketing team or individuals who push edgy projects and ideas into hotels.

  • WHERE WILL YOU BE ON YOUR NEXT DAY OFF?

With friends eating, drinking, stroking cats and petting dogs in Brooklyn.

  • WHAT'S THE NEXT BIG IDEA? WHAT ARE HOTELS MISSING?

Technology is the big bet in hospitality. Smart/mobile check-in, bluetooth beaconing, Google Glass hotel apps… they all tailor and personalize the guest experience. That’s where the future is for sure. Oh, and boutique hostels.

  • WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING IN A FEW YEARS FROM NOW?

Looking for opportunity in everything I do, with everyone around me.

  • CAREER ANECDOTE YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?

There were some fun times in and around the GE Club (Great Eastern Hotel), which I remember fondly… but without much clarity.
