‘DECODE EXPERIENTIAL’ Wants You to Rethink Experiential Art Spaces

A new perspective on the idea of ‘experiential’ space

The word ‘experiential’ has been thrown around more and more in the last few years, as brands try to capitalize on a desire for experiences in an increasingly digital world. The problem is that these curated experiences can feel superficial if these brands aren’t considering how people actually interact, or want to interact with art and creative space. This is what drove Jess Conatser of creative agency As We Are and Daphne Jouanneteau of interactive event space Lightbox to create DECODE EXPERIENTIAL, a new series that showcases visual artists in an experiential space, while discussing the very topics most relevant to them. The series makes use of Lightbox’s advanced sound, lighting, and display features to envelop guests in digital art – debuting tonight with work by 3D animator Hayden Zezula and film director Sam Shannon. The night will center around the topic “Creating art for oneself, vs for a client vs for what we call online “followers,” featuring a discussion between both artists and Tumblr’s Head of Culture & Fashion Valentine Uhovski. Though it’s still only the first edition of an ongoing series, brands should pay attention to DECODE EXPERIENTIAL in order shift the conversation around experiential events while discovering artists designing creative spaces people will actually want to interact with.
