Maya Brings Bright Oaxacan Flavors to Ludlow House

Fresh Mexican dishes with a cocktail list to match

Though not as famous as its Meatpacking counterpart, the members-only Ludlow House has brought tranquility and refinement to one of the most lively blocks in the already lively Lower East Side—but they too want to add a little flavor for the summer. That’s why Ludlow House has transformed their restaurant Ducked Up into Maya, a seasonal pop-up focused on bright Mexican cuisine and cocktails. The menu features Oaxacan and Baja-inspired dishes: the squash blossom quesadilla, young coconut aguachile, and the spicy tuna tostada. Larger plates include a whole bass with red chili adobo and a wagyu skirt steak, and of course there are a selection of tacos and enchiladas. The drinks are split into variations of margaritas, including an elderflower and tamarind option and a blood orange & sage variant, as well as Mexican-tinged versions of classics. Those feature something as a simple as a colada made with mezcal, or something a little more unique such as a Baja take on an old fashioned containing mezcal, chocolate mole, and ancho Reyes bitters for a kick. Naturally mezcal and tequila are key here, and Maya features a wide selection including favorites like Gem & Bolt alongside uncommon indulgences like the top-shelf Casa Dragones Joven. The interiors also get a little bit of a makeover, most notably with a new mural by Brazilian artist João Salomão. All of this amounts to a perfect seasonal pop-up, offering simple yet delectable takes on classic Mexican food that you’ll be clamoring for in the warmer weather.
