WHY WE WANT TO BOOK IT: A riverside landmark since 1866, originally opened as the Österreichischer Hof and built in the founding-epoch style by Carl Freiherr von Schwarz. It remains the only historic grand hotel in Salzburg and one of the last five-star superior hotels in Austria still family-owned, now run by the Gürtler and Winkler families.

HOW ARE THE ROOMS? There are 110 rooms and suites, split roughly 67 percent rooms and 33 percent suites. Categories range from Deluxe Rooms (24–35 sqm) to Junior and Signature Suites, up to the Presidential Suite and Sacher Sky Suite at 147 sqm. Many rooms face the Salzach River, with balconies or terraces in select categories. Interiors balance traditional architecture with modern amenities like Apple TV, minibars, and air conditioning.

WHAT ELSE IS CALLING MY NAME? The Original Sacher-Torte is still made in Austria in 34 individual steps and served at Café Sacher Salzburg, open daily from 8am to 10pm. Beyond the café, Sacher Grill serves Austrian staples like Tafelspitz, Salzburger classics, and Wiener Schnitzel with river views. Zirbelzimmer, dating back to the hotel’s opening, serves seasonal Austrian cuisine in a historic wood-paneled dining room overlooking the Salzach.

WHAT’S BEYOND THE ROOM? A Health Club with sauna, steam bath, massage rooms, couple’s treatment room, relaxation area, and fitness space equipped with treadmill, bike, cable tower, and yoga equipment. Treatments include massage and body therapies, plus a Vital Bar with teas and snacks. There is also a concierge team known for arranging Salzburg Festival tickets, private city guides, Mozart’s Birthplace visits, and Hallstatt day trips.
