Highs & Lows

  • Maria knows how to host, as does Mark and all the team at Pilguse. They are attentive and responsive but not over baring and too in your space.

  • The panoramic views from the bedroom of the silence of the Estonian nature and the never-ending ultra green landscapes. All you see when you look left right and centre are field of green.

  • Biking to the Windmill for a picnic was a highlight! We love activity based holidays.

  • Local food and flavours on the breakfast and dinner menus; use of different kinds of pickling methods, herbs from the vegetable garden and the gin and vodka from Pilguse’s own distillery.

  • The smoke sauna was fully booked during our stay! It was ok, as we used the Iglu sauna instead.

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

You can book a stay through Booking.com or other platforms, but I booked directly by email. Maria was very responsive, and the team patiently answered all my questions about dinner, excursions, and more. At Pilguse, activities are arranged on-site once you check in, as they prefer not to confirm plans in advance due to changing weather conditions.

  • Future Forward

The residency’s water comes from a natural spring in the dolomite and limestone ridge, providing exceptionally pure, mineral-rich water. The property runs on an off-grid, chemical-free bio-waste system, and meals—whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner—are prepared with ingredients sourced mainly from the on-site vegetable garden. It really is high end eco living.

  • Music

    Lo-fi ambient pysch-chill music

  • Designed By

The manor and residency were and continue to be carefully restored under Maria’s leadership, preserving many of the property’s original 19th-century features.

  • Health & Wellness

The saunas are central to the Pilguse experience with the restored smoke sauna and the Estonian designed ‘iglu’ sauna, a practice that is believed to be pertinent to rest, recovery and relaxation. Following a hot sauna, guests can cool down in the freshwater springs or enjoy a relaxing dip in the hot tub or take a swim in the natural pool. A wealth of activities will also be offered to guests, whether it be horseback riding along the natural woodlands, foraging and hiking trails or fishing and kayaking in the lake.

  • Food

The menu is seasonal and based on local produce, with many ingredients sourced from Pilguse’s garden, Estonia, and neighboring regions. Breakfast is included, picnics can be prepared for the fields or Baltic shore, and dinner is served daily. Dishes range from smoked trout, chicken, and meats to cured fish, Pilguse-style tapas, and vegetable plates like smoked aubergine with yogurt or roasted cauliflower with cashew cream.

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

The bar serves a curated selection of cocktails made with spirits from Pilguse’s in-house Elda Distillery, which produces gin and vodka infused with local botanicals—juniper, wildflowers, berries, seaweed, and coastal herbs. Inspired by the island’s western shoreline, Elda’s name and flavors reflect Saaremaa’s rugged nature.

  • Minibar & Retail

The E2 Coastal Gin and M1 Coastal Vodka, distilled by Pilguse’s own Elda Distillery, are available to buy at the hotel. A perfect keepsake from Estonia, their flavors capture the windswept coast of Pilguse, with notes of juniper, wildflowers, berries, coastal herbs, and seaweed.

  • Accessibility

The hotel is fully accessible, with all facilities located on the ground floor. Most rooms feature ground-level sleeping areas and accessible bathrooms. The only exception is access to a few remote cabins in nature, which require crossing grassy terrain.

  • Pet Friendly

    Yes

  • Price

This is a luxury countryside retreat. For a more “affordable” luxe feel, consider the ÖÖD Mirror Cabins or glamping, rather than the manor itself.

With nature at its heart, Pilguse Residency offers experiences that let guests immerse themselves in Saaremaa’s undiscovered landscape and enjoy the island’s flavors — including spirits distilled on-site. Wonderfully remote, the estate lies within the protected Karala–Pilguse Nature Area
