There are three swimming pools, an on-site Chef’s Garden, the 18-hole championship course, plus more than 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: North County San Diego doesn’t really have an off-season. The climate keeps the resort in play year-round for golf, spa days, and time outdoors, with proximity to both the inland desert and the coast when you want a change of scenery.

WHAT ROOM SHOULD I BOOK? 42 of the 286 guestrooms are Spanish Revival suites to match the rest of the architecture. The extra room to spread out for longer stays is worth it.

WHAT ELSE IS CALLING MY NAME? AVANT, the resort’s signature restaurant runs a seasonal, Baja California–inspired menu refined through classic French technique, much of it pulled from the Chef’s Garden, and the regional wine program is award-winning for a reason. Veranda is a little more casual, serving modern American on an open-air patio overlooking the 18th green and the San Pasqual Mountains. Fireplace included.

Is Rancho Bernardo Inn secluded?

How close is it to San Diego?

About 25 minutes north of downtown, set in the hills of the San Pasqual Valley — close enough for a day into the city or out to North County’s wineries and breweries, far enough that the resort stays quiet once you’re back on the property.

What about the grounds and access to nature?

The property is landscaped rather than wild — imported handmade fountains, an on-site chef’s garden supplying AVANT’s kitchen, and jasmine-scented paths around the spa. The actual wilderness is a short drive out: Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve (about 11 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails through oak woodland and chaparral) and Lake Hodges are both nearby, along with the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and North County’s wine country.

What’s the spa like?

Treatments happen in indoor-outdoor casitas linked by open-air walkways rather than one spa building. Spa guests get their own saline pool and private cabanas, separate from the resort’s main pools.
