Gasthaus Traube
- Where:
- Why:More Swiss honeymoon!
- When:January 2025
- Who:Two honeymooners
"Swiss heritage ski-country elegance with modern Scandinavian aesthetic "
Old-world values co-mingling with fresh style. Swiss heritage with modern Scandinavian aesthetic, complete with underground tunnels, coffee carts on each landing, and attention to every detail. The Garden of Earthly Delights, a surrealist masterpiece by the Dutch Master Bosch, threads playful micro details through the experience.
Highs & Lows
-
The staff. Claudia & Julian at the front desk, Ramy in the kitchen, Matus in the restaurant; all considered their time at the Traube a gift. That perspective immediately translated to incredible hospitality.
-
An oversized printed quarterly newspaper featuring regional highlights and makers. For typography fans, bonus points for the font choices.
-
On the landing for each floor, there’s a coffee cart for guests. Welcomes a sleepy good morning or smile from every guest in passing.
-
There’s an old underground tunnel that connects the two buildings - a physical and metaphorical bridge that connects history and today. It felt like a secret, wrapped in luxury and style. We took the stairs each time just for the tunnel.
-
The surrealist twist was completely unexpected and elevated everything in arms reach. Our wedding theme was A Surrealist Soirée, and Meg studied the Dutch masters in school, so this ticked all of our surprise and delight boxes.
-
Heated floors in the bathroom were the icing on a very luxurious cake. There’s nothing cozier than watching the snow fall from inside a warm window.

Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience
Pictures don't do it justice. We weren’t expecting to be whisked into a luxury wonderland, but the moment we stepped through the door, we were on our way. The front desk planned a whole art and architecture tour through Buchs and Lichtenstein after mentioned a love for the design features of the hotel.
-
Future Forward
Ceramic cups and glass only - we didn’t see a single piece of plastic during our stay, and there are 4 EV chargers stationed out front.
-
Music
Relaxed regional and seemingly local music helped authentically connect the old world and the new.
-
Year Opened
2023, but the building dates back to the early 1800s and has been a brewery, restaurant and tavern. The restaurant re-opened in 2022 after extensive renovations facilitated by local architects and craftsmen.
-
Designed By
A small army of skilled creatives brought the Traub to life. Led by owner visionaries Katharina Schertler-Secli and Ivan Secli they assembled a team of architects, designers, stonemasons, landscape designers, and more. No corner of this property was forgotten.
-
Health & Wellness
Partners with local spas to direct guests seeking a wellness experience.
-
Food
There are three options here, and this is no ordinary hotel dining experience. Breakfast (included) is a treat, with pastries, sweets, savories, and coffee, tea, and fresh juice. We were out for lunch, but dinners were incredible: two concepts to honor the regional history and the building's own story. The Brewery employs a fresh take on classic Swiss fare. Refined, elegant, seasonal, with hyper-local ingredients. The Grape Hall offers a sophisticated, alternative under incredible artworks. Loved the butter curls prepared table-side at every meal.
-
Bar, Events & Nightlife
We were in Buchs to rest and recharge, and the Traube is known for an extensive wine list, so we stayed local to the hotel for drinks.
-
Minibar & Retail
The lobby has a few merch items, but the takeaways are really the embedded design. Be sure to study the menu, instructions for the heater, coasters, and more. The delights are in the surrealist details.
-
Accessibility
There are no rooms on the first floor, and the elevator is fairly small. Check with the hotel for specific questions.
