"The edgy and more urban bigger sister of Shila, Mona is an artful escape in the heart of Athens"

AT A GLANCE: Mona is a design-focused city retreat located in Psirri, in the heart of the Greek capital. Essentially a celebration of the art of living, Mona’s philosophy weaves together simplicity with genuine human connection, an ethos represented in each of its 20 bedrooms. Like its sister hotel Shila, everything at Mona — linens, carpets, furniture, ceramics, and art — is highly curated with an expert eye and is for sale. A hub for local and international creatives, the cultural programming is always buzzing at Mona, ranging from supper clubs to movie nights on the terrace and live music in the basement speakeasy. Mona is perfect for a solo or romantic getaway.

Highs & Lows

  • Being based in Pysri (Athen's most vibrant neighborhood) means you are only a short walk away from the Acropolis and ancient Agora, as well as excellent restaurants and bars

  • Mona was designed with great respect for the building's 1950s architecture. The structure of this former textile factory remains unchanged, revealing 70 years of history. I love the preservation of the original features, including a bold iron staircase, terrazzo floors, original metal windows, and a marble façade. The hotel makes an art form from peeling paint, exposed steel pipes, and warehouse-size ceilings

  • Ask for Room 16 if you want an emperor-size bed (78 x 78" or 200x200cm.) and a balcony terrace. This is one of the best rooms in the house

  • The rooftop bar has amazing views and hosts the CLUB MONAMOUR nights

  • The breakfast has such a beautiful and generous offering of all your favorites. I love that you can choose where to enjoy it

  • Mona is a stage for artists and designers, a hub for discovering emerging and established talent outside the traditional white cube. I especially fell in love with the ceramics of Greek-based artist Anna Karountzou. You can find her work on Instagram @anna.karountzou

  • The service at Mona is laid-back and friendly, with the primary form of communication being through the iMessage function on the iPad

  • It can be a little noisy on weekends, but nah dah — you're in the middle of the most vibrant pocket of Athens, and you'll probably be at the bars yourself anyway. Just pack some earplugs in case
