"Sweeping coastal perfection for the whole family "
Highs & Lows
-
The spa, the spa, the spa. Everything from the treatment rooms to the pool was perfection. Out of all the well kept spaces on 100+ acres, the spa lounge rooms, cabanas, restaurants and treatments were my favorite. 2 hours of seaweed wraps and soaking is a rebirth
-
For families of any age, it can't miss. So much room to roam, the activity programming is beyond (by age or as a group), the service at the restaurants somehow balances kid friendly and upscale
-
Falconry tour! Joe Roy III, Resident Falconer introduced us to all his birds and a crash course on California ecology + the ancient art of getting rid of nuisance birds naturally
-
We dropped Sloane at the Kid's Club for a few hours while we went kayaking. She made friends and art projects + Madeleine was a dream. 100% tear free experience
-
Kayaking! There's too much programming to list but do NOT miss an open-ocean kayak from the bay. Our guys were great (Marcus, Ben, Flynn, James!) and we saw packs of roving dolphins. Put sunscreen on your toes
-
Every one of the many restaurants was exemplary quality and service, from high end sushi to morning snack bar
-
Accommodations were meticulous, but the in-room style was a bit corporate/conference for such a stunning location. The rooms feel like a missed opportunity amid the rest of the gorgeous property
Important Bits
-
Type
High-end family resort
-
Vibe
Coastal luxury. You will be cared for
-
Location
Miles to itself, all rocky beachfront and resort paths
-
Rooms
Over 600 between the rooms, casitas and villas
-
Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience
We arrived late and depleted after our flight was delayed by almost a whole day. Once on the ground, every touchpoint made sure we were comfortable and settled in quickly. I get why people come here for every family trip
-
Future Forward
Terranea takes its patch of coastline seriously. 15 acres of native habitat restored, plants grown from a local seed bank, endangered butterflies sheltering, 50 yr old trees saved from the Marineland days (former aqua theme park) rather than cleared. They keep bees, grow much of what they serve, working closely with Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy
-
Music
Didn't notice much in particular-- too busy listening to the surf!
-
Year Opened
2009, with ongoing refurbishment
-
Designed By
Lowe Enterprises, with Hill Glazier Architects and Scheurer Architects, paid close attention to preserving the ecology and natural habitat of this ever-changing coastline. The structures are a very California fusion of Mediterranean and Spanish beach style
-
Health & Wellness
4 pools with totally different vibes from family to pool-party to spa oasis. It's all about the new $4.5M refresh of the 50,000 spa-- stunning, and worth a trip all on its own. These spaces were my personal highlight
-
Food
A whole village to choose from. Japanese, fine dining Euro, spa smoothies, waffle bar for kids, lobster roll casual-- it's all here
-
Bar, Events & Nightlife
Plenty, at all of the above. The baby and toddler dancing to live music post-dinner was a free-for-all. Sloane was obsessed
-
Minibar & Retail
Everything from luxe resort fashion boutique to pool toys and sundries
-
Accessibility
Ocean-view, deluxe rooms, and private villa options; pools and restaurants are all ADA, tons of accessible pathways and overlooks
-
Pet Friendly
Dogs with a fee (some breed restrictions) and welcome at some restaurants, too. We saw lots of pocket puppies
-
Children
Preferred ◡̈
-
Price
Rates from rooms to villas are wide ranging, but surprisingly reasonable given the service level. We saw lots of groups of friends with kids for milestone birthdays, etc

Los Angeles is 20 miles away, but the Palos Verdes Peninsula is a world of its own. Rugged sea cliffs, tide pools, native chaparral, the drama of the California coastline here will never get old. Being here was a reminder of how much we need to preserve and look after our beaches and land, and all the small and large ways the hospitality industry can contribute to the effort.
