United Places The bathroom has a futuristic, modernist feel – like how I’d imagine an ultra-luxury train transport in 2070. It’s wall-to-wall marble, with Le Labo products and plush, ethically made towels.

Highs & Lows

  • Design...this is a no-expense-spared situation, with designer furniture, luxe finishes, custom light fixtures and the mirrored bath pod that’s like an in-room art installation. It was kind of mindblowing. Every minute element has been considered; every surface is sublime.

  • Sustainability...the hotel has implemented some impressive sustainability initiatives across the hotel, including: elimination of single use plastic and packaging (refillable amenities, washable slippers), harvested rainwater, solar panels for both hot water and power generation, and local products sourced wherever possible.

  • Location...literally steps from Melbourne’s beautiful Botantic Gardens, and a short and lovely walk to the CBD and major art galleries. It’s also central for exploring other cool neighbourhoods in the north and south.

  • Amenity details...each room has its own set of custom ceramic crockery by a local artist (make sure you say yes to a pot of the hotel’s delicious in-house, night-time tea to sample the mugs) and Le Labo bath products.

  • Space...room to stretch out and relax, or work, or eat. And lots of nooks to do so.

  • No traditional reception desk. The service is fantastic and thoughtful (and I always reached someone by phone) but when I went to check-out there was no-one at the desk. Call ahead from your room to avoid that.
