Il Pellicano’s Enduring Allure

60 years of cliffside luxury, timeless style, and a spirit you can’t quite put into words

Il Pellicano isn’t just a hotel — it’s an institution. Perched dramatically on the cliffside of Porto Ercole in Tuscany, this Mediterranean legend still hums with the glamour of its golden-age guests. Back in the ‘60s, it was the hideout of Hollywood elite and Italian aristocrats; now, it’s the low-key-luxury choice for those who appreciate quiet elegance over loud extravagance.

Tucked into the Monte Argentario coastline, Il Pellicano — which we stayed and reviewed in 2019 — feels like a secret. You arrive through a pine forest, descend to the sea via private lifts or stone paths, and end up at a saltwater pool carved into the cliff. Rooms are spread across the main villa and a scattering of cottages, each one tastefully dressed in crisp linens, terracotta tones, and Carrara marble. Many open onto terraces with sea views. It’s true Mediterranean chic without trying too hard.

On June 7th, the Pelli, as it is affectionately called by the lucky ones who check in, celebrated 60 years of a well-lived history. Our A Hotel Life founder, Ben Pundole, was there dancing the night away and shares his insider scoop with us:

“Il Pellicano’s 60th anniversary was a celebration truly engaging every sense. We were welcomed with live jazz, a perfectly curated aperitivo, and a dinner inspired by the bold flavors and style of the ‘60’s, when Il Pellicano was born. DJ Paul Harris kept everyone dancing around the pool until the early hours. The crowd — elegant, international, and effortlessly stylish — came from the worlds of fashion, film, and beyond. But what truly set the evening apart was the atmosphere: vibrant, celebratory, and full of charm and eccentricity. A reflection of Marie-Louise Sciò’s exceptional eye for detail and her natural talent for bringing the most incredible people together.”

Roberto Sciò, Marie-Louise’s father, bought Hotel Il Pellicano in 1979. After first visiting as a guest in 1967, he fell in love with its charm and seized the chance to preserve and modernize it when the original owner decided to sell.

Marie-Louise, who we interviewed for our AHL Live Podcast in 2020, was raised between London and Rome and grew up immersed in the world of Hotel Il Pellicano, became its CEO and Creative Director in 2011. She recalls being a child sneaking behind the bushes to watch the parties happening around the pool — and also behind Slim Aarons’ lenses as he captured some of his iconic images shot at the hotel.

Under Marie-Louise’s visionary leadership, Il Pellicano continues to evolve while honoring its heritage. It remains a haven for those who seek more than just a place to stay — a place where every detail tells a story, every moment feels personal, and the spirit of timeless Italian elegance lives on. After 60 years, Il Pellicano isn’t just resting on its legendary past; it’s shaping the future of luxury with the same quiet confidence that has always made it so undeniably special.
