Highs & Lows

  • Design purists will appreciate the new spin on modernist architect Walter Becket's original midcentury hotel from the 1960s. (He was also known for LA's infamous Capitol Records Building.)

  • Studio Collective's mid-century modern refurb is inventive, colorful and subdued at the same time. Splashes of tricolor terrazzo, soft wood and bright tile geometrics make the common areas inviting enough to hang out all day and night.

  • The Caravan Swim Club restaurant and bar is enough of a reason to come. Creatively spearheaded by Steve Livigni (previously Scopa and Dama), the al fresco dining space is a great merge with his Baja California inspired menu, a direct evolution of his teenage roots spent surfing up and down the coast. Livigni loves California culture, and you can tell.

  • The tequila and mezcal aficionado behind the bar took the time to walk and talk us through an entire flight customized to our preferences, with a crash course on all things agave history, culture and production. If you thought you didn't like tequila, you were wrong.

  • At first I was confused by the location — a big box store, strip mall feeling stretch of busy Lincoln Boulevard. Then I realized how close it is to everything else on the West Side. Plus, once on the property, it's a secluded oasis that feels entirely separated from the busy neighborhood.

  • The rooms are light filled, streamlined, sharp, and make a great use of space.

  • It was yet another hotel right before June took over, and maintains an old school, slightly rundown motel vibe in some hallways and thoroughfares that's a little jarring next to the glossy refurb of the rooms and common areas, but overall it works.

  • The aforementioned immediate surroundings are not the most picturesque.

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

Cheerful smiles and helpful staff make the airy, breezy lobby feel inviting, accented by a larger than life, colorful abstract mural from Brooklyn artist Alex Proba

  • Future Forward

Sustainability focused water, energy and food & beverage initiatives. Removing plastics from all properties is a high priority for the brand. The newly opened sister property in Malibu uses only Boxed Water, with plans to transition this location early by 2022 to a similar sustainable alternative. All take-away materials for the F&B outlets are made of sustainable materials

  • Music

    Low-key modern beach tunes

  • Year Opened

    2020

  • Designed By

Venice-based design firm Studio Collective via Proper Hospitality

  • Health & Wellness

The pool deck is the star of the property; same day, in-room appointments booked through Soothe; onsite gym is modern and serviceable.

  • Food

Along with the punchy, contemporary SoCal design, the outdoor restaurant space and food & bev programming would be my No. 1 reason to go

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

Weekly live music events. The open-air bar is still somehow cozy despite being completely outdoors and makes the restaurant a lively, early or late night, year round hotspot

    Complimentary in-room mini bar

  • Accessibility

Call the hotel ahead of your stay for a tailored conversation on personal needs for the hearing, visual or physically impaired

Very welcome (except cats) for $35/pet/night fee. 10% goes to the Best Friends Animal Society to help a fellow pet in need

  • Children

Yes. Several from one family had taken over the pool the day I was there, but I got the feeling that wasn't the norm

The more affordable little sibling of the uber chic Proper Hotels, Hotel June maintains the style at a fraction of the price

The immediate surroundings of The June are a funny little pocket of suburban-feeling Playa Del Rey, but a 5 minute drive makes it clear how ideal the locale really is. Close proximity to all the West Side beaches, tons of restaurants, local colleges and universities, SoFi Stadium (host of the 2022 Super Bowl) and of course, LAX, means you can save your airport commute for the very last second.
