Valverde Hotel Please forgive me if the bed is undone but I thought it would better render the idea of what it means to sleep in heaven. One amazing feature that was a first time for me: sensors close to the bed turn night lights on and off — so clever!

When I first saw the stunning Valverde room I thought "I wish this was my living room..."

Valverde Hotel ... Wish granted. I was not only able to spend a whole day working there, but a do-not-disturb sign was placed by the door, they brought me tea and cookies and warmly welcomed and escorted my guests over. PS: look at that antique zodiac mirror!

Highs & Lows

  • The team is as hospitable and knowledgeable as it gets. A lot of them are with the hotel since it first opened in 2014, which is a wonderful thing in hospitality

  • The location is perfect. Although I am usually reluctant about staying on a large, busy avenue, the hotel is secluded, calm and peaceful. Lisbon has an overall gentle feeling and even its most famed boulevard follows suit. It was really enjoyable to watch the coming and going on the street and Valverde is the perfect departure point to explore the best of Lisbon

  • The silence... Heaven! My room felt like a sensory deprivation chamber. Yes, it was in the new wing of the hotel, which faces the green internal courtyard, but the street-facing ones are equipped with the same noise-blocking features. And lots of good textiles for that soft and efficient padding

  • The art is so on point. Never the placement of an endless art collection in a hotel felt so natural, so bold yet elegantly understated at the same time. Brilliant mix of styles, mediums and eras

  • The atmosphere — it truly felt like I was home, or what my home would look like in a chic Euro dream. Not just because I spent 72 straight hours on premise, but because during all that time I felt private yet looked after. And the influx of interesting characters kept my curious spirit fed

  • The thoughtfulness from the people and from the space itself. Where else have we seen a sensor that will light a soft, low light when we put our feet out of the bed, and turn it off when we are back under the covers? For me it was a first time

  • The amenities were very much enjoyed: heated outdoor pool, small but efficient gym, massage room, lots of spaces and corners where to peacefully work from, either indoor or outdoors in the patio

  • Would love to be back and find more interesting options and a selection of great Portuguese goodies in the minibar and in-room retail. There are so many of them!

  • Such thoughtful property would look even better cutting off waste. Plastic water bottles from gym and mini, single-use plastic toiletries should go and make room for refillable everything — including the water bottles

  • A speaker would be a lovely addition to the room

Important Bits

  • Type

    Luxury intimate hotel

  • Vibe

As elegant as it is homely

  • Location

    Central and convenient

  • Rooms

    48

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

Although the website is a bit difficult to navigate, the hotel team was super attentive via phone and email, making sure I was hosted in the best room for my needs. I got one of the ten rooms overlooking the internal courtyard which was lovely

  • Future Forward

Valverde Hotel takes great care of their staff, some have been with them since the hotel first opened in 2014. The hotel opens its doors and patio to non-guests to enjoy, which is generous and progressive. I love the mix of classic décor style and clever use of technology, like the sensors that turn night lights on and off as you get in and out of bed

  • Music

Sometimes classic and easy, sometimes pop and more energetic... I'd keep it on the classy side if I could choose

  • Year Opened

    2014

  • Designed By

Designer José Pedro Vieira and architect Diogo Rosa Lã

  • Health & Wellness

Elevated heated pool, a small gym and a treatment room for appointments that need to be arranged in advance

  • Food

Intimate and sophisticated, Sítio restaurant is one of the most outstanding places in the hotel, with its backlit wooden panels, the ceiling covered with Burel – a traditional Portuguese fabric made from 100% pure sheep wool — the mosaic glass-coated tile flooring and its French doors that open the space towards the indoor garden. The menu by Chef Carla Sousa offers a contemporary Portuguese cuisine inspired both by her Cape Verdean roots and the traditional Portuguese gastronomy

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

Sítio restaurant can be enjoyed as a bar too. Drinks on the verdant patio are a delight

  • Minibar & Retail

Minibar was stock with the very basics — water, soda, wine — and I see a huge opportunity to include Portuguese delicacies to be consumed in the room or taken away

  • Accessibility

The hotel is not accessible for those with mobility impairments

  • Pet Friendly

    Yes

  • Children

    Yes

  • Price

On the higher side but totally worth it
