Highs & Lows

  • Sleeping in a Berber lodge with no electricity feels like a calming experience everyone should have

  • The food is outstanding and memorable

  • Clear nights, with no light pollution, which means perfect night sky for stargazing

  • The best place to disengage from mundane tasks and obligations

  • A pool in the middle of the desert is a luxury I will say yes to

  • Seeing the camels working like that made me sad. I would prefer to engage in more compassionate ways to sightsee

Important Bits

  • Type

    Desert Camp

  • Vibe

Candlelit desert retreat. Bring your magic carpet!

  • Location

In the Agafay desert, right outside of Marrakech, which makes it just off the grid enough

  • Rooms

Eight en-suite bedrooms and five lodges

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

La Pause sent their driver to pick us up at our riad in Marrakech. Grateful for this, as navigating the desert with no reception is tricky. Upon arrival, they had lunch and tea ready for us. If there were any stress before getting there, it would definitely vanish!

  • Future Forward

It's timeless! The whole place is solar-powered, the rooms and main lounge areas are candlelit, all bath products are natural, and you can feel a commitment to preserving local tradition, which we all want when we travel. Sign me up for a future like this

  • Music

Berber musicians play live at night under the stars, and the whole place is candlelit and full of aromas and textures

  • Year Opened

    2003

  • Designed By

Frederic Alaime — a visionary and an adventurer who found himself lost in the desert of Agafay some 20 years ago. He pioneered hotel development in the area

  • Health & Wellness

Two gorgeous pools and a hammam. Massages available upon request

  • Food

Exquisite Moroccan lamb dishes, couscous, chicken tagine with olives, and apricot stew. Every single thing we ate was to die for

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

If you come with friends or a partner, I recommend taking advantage of the quiet magic of La Pause. At night you can only hear string instruments playing in the distance

  • Minibar & Retail

There's a bar by the pool serving all the usual things. But no bar in the rooms as there's no electricity

  • Accessibility

    Not accessible

  • Pet Friendly

    Pets are not allowed

  • Children

Children of all ages are welcome

Hotel Location La Pause, Agafay Desert, Agafay, Morocco

The Agafay Desert, just 25 mins outside Marrakech, is the most accessible desert for those who don't have several days to explore. That doesn't mean it's not as wonderful. On the contrary, it is picturesque, with rolling dunes reaching as far as the eye can see.
