400 year old peacock fountain. The sign reads, "When in use, creates a magical illusion. The peacocks themselves respond to the magic, as they often gather here to dance".

The palace and outbuildings were built in the
late 19th century. These canals wind their way
through the grounds and include an aqueduct.

Pretend you’re Nero or Merv Griffin
in the opulent and deserted marble pool.

Bal Samand Lake Palace View of the adjacent Bal Samond Palace- there are great trails around this lake and into the nearby hills. This is the one place in India where you don’t see anyone. Saw a world class sunset here.

Bal Samand Garden Retreat is redone from
a local Maharajah’s stable- there’s an equestrian vibe
about the place, but it doesn’t feel stuffy.

Highs & Lows

  • The hotel and the accessible grounds and gardens are world class- excellent walks and hikes available replete with wildlife and lush flora.

  • The rooms, converted from the stables of the palace, are cozy and the environment is extremely quiet and relaxing- a welcome sanctuary from India’s frenetic pace.

  • The comp breakfast is delicious and elaborate and the nighttime BBQ, common with Indian heritage hotels, is more tasteful- no dancing shows- and has great food.

  • We were there with absolutely no other guests, so I can’t confirm the placid vibe would be there if a tour group was on site.
