Highs & Lows

  • I stayed in a quirkily-designed five star room... which included a very Instagram-friendly hammock! But I took a peak at a few others, and they’re all impressive and full of personality

  • The room was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Towering ceilings made of gigantic wooden pillars. I basically stayed in a five star attic suite. It was all so dreamy. Kind of gave me laidback ‘70s vibes. (Although there was a flat screen TV.) An indie rocker’s dream bedroom. I’m surprised a vintage guitar wasn’t included.

  • My floor was very quiet! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

  • You must set your alarm and run to their traditional Dutch breakfast. The bread, the cheese and the pastry selection drove my tastebuds insane.

  • The restaurant/cafe/bar is fabulous. And not just the food. I could sit and down cappuccinos for hours while doing work on my laptop and/or people watching. It’s so spacious with high ceilings. Loved the funky furniture, the light fixtures, etc. Special shout out to the communal table lined with orchids!

  • Also fabulous is their library, stocked with cool art and design books. Make sure to explore the hallways and the public spaces and meeting rooms. Dutch design heaven everywhere!

  • - The building lacks AC. But my room was still comfortable -- I was provided with two fans. Anyway, the Amsterdam summer weather is gorgeous (AKA no humidity) so you’ll be fine!

  • - No ghost sightings! Okay, I guess this is a good thing.

Important Bits

  • Type

This is what I’d call a very unique “experience” hotel. Upon entry, you can just FEEL that the majestic/mysterious building’s got quite a story to tell. There’s so much history going on here, dating back to when it opened in 1921 as a hotel for immigrants. Then in 1939, it was used as a refugee camp for Jewish people, and during World War II, the Germans used it as a detention center. Between 1964 to 1989, the building served as a prison for young offenders. Then it was a place for artists to live and work until 2001 when soon after, it’d become the fabulous Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy.

  • Vibe

My feel was it’s for the artsy, adventurous, well-traveled types who want something super special and aren’t into the boring business hotels.

  • Location

    East Amsterdam AKA Amsterdam oost!

  • Rooms

117 unique rooms created by 50 Dutch designers!

  • Music

Not loud, perfect volume. I remember hearing Joe’s 2001 hit AKA “I Wanna Know” and I died of joy.

  • Year Opened

It was reopened as the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy in 2004.

  • Designed By

Many were involved. According to a press release, architectural agency MVRDV were commissioned to transform the building back into its original purpose -- a hotel. It’s a contemporary Dutch design mixed with the classical twenties style from when the hotel was first opened. The interior design is a collaborative effort of Claudy Jongstra, Atelier van Lieshout, Richard Hutten, and more.

  • Health & Wellness

No, but who needs any of that when you can rent a bike at the reception and ride around like all of the locals? (As for me, I am terrified of biking so I opted for walking/the tram/Uber.)

  • Restaurant

The Lloyd Restaurant and it’s open from 7am until 1am every day. Fantastically designed and a massive space boasting heavenly natural light. LOVE the spacious outdoors terrace. The food is classical European cuisine with seasonal and local products. You must wake up in time for their traditional Dutch breakfast. MUST. I’m still dreaming of the cheese selection and the chocolate-coated croissants.

  • Bar

There’s a stylish bar in the restaurant.

  • Minibar

No, but 24/7 really good room service! And free coffee/tea.

  • Children

    Yes.

  • Price

This is the first 1-to-5 star hotel in the world, so the room rates vary depending on the room type and season, going from 65 to 500 euros.
