"A dark, decadent Belle Époque hideaway"
Behind two lanterns and a discrete door on Rue de Bruxelles, Maison Souquet recreates a Belle Époque maison close a short walk from the Moulin Rouge. Jacques Garcia designed its 20 rooms and suites, each named for a courtesan, plus three salons and a hidden spa with a ten-meter pool and hammam that travelers can reserve for themselves. I spent a couple nights here with my wife a month after our wedding—it’s the perfect place for a romantic rendezvous in Paris.
Highs & Lows
-
The private spa is the perfect amenity for refreshing between portions of the day. We walked about 20,000 steps per day, and reserved it for a swim and steam every day before dinner.
-
Our room was sexy, sophisticated, and spacious. Named after the Countess of Castiglione, a mistress of Emperor Napoleon III, the junior suite was dressed in sensual reds with a walk-in closet, soaking tub in the bathroom, and a Juliette balcony.
-
The salons are stunning, and are a step-up from your typical hotel public spaces. Salon des Mille et Une Nuits has Moorish arches and original furnishings and art from a villa in Belgium. Salon des Petits Bonheurs houses the bar and a library with a fireplace. The Winter Garden sits under a glass roof adjacent to a small outdoor space.
-
Moulin Rouge is right up the street, so depending on which way you walk, the sidewalks can get hectic.
-
We stayed during a heatwave, and the air conditioning in our suite couldn't quite keep up, but that comes with a 19th-century Paris building.

The facade is low-key, so don't be surprised if you drive right past the door. It's a nice way to start your stay, and very on-brand

Designed By
Jacques Garcia, the French designer behind Hôtel Costes and La Réserve in Paris. He dressed Maison Souquet in about 2,000 meters of fabric drawn from 120 references, and each room takes its own style: Empire, Napoleon III, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, or Art Deco
-
Health & Wellness
The subterranean spa has a ten-meter pool under a vaulted ceiling of gold stars on cobalt blue, a hammam, and a treatment room, with massages and beauty treatments on request. Each guest room can reserve the space for an hour per day by calling the front desk
-
Food
Breakfast, afternoon tea, and light bites (think foie gras, caviar, French cheeses) are served in the salons downstairs. There's no full-service restaurant, but in-room dining runs 24 hours, impressive for a hotel of this size

The bar lives in the Salon des Petits Bonheurs, behind a heavy velvet curtain. The decor is enchanting, the seating feels private, and there are classic board games, which makes it perfect for a romantic cocktail before or after dinner
