Casa Pueblo Tulum
Where:Tulum, Mexico
Why:To escape the New York winter.
When:December 2018
Who:Me and some magical animales.

Casa Pueblo’s distinctive façade stands out on Tulum downtown’s main road. The patchy dark hue was achieved by creating a mix of different stucco textures and raw black pigment that once applied revealed intriguing subtle shades of purple and green.

Welcoming smiles and quality control at check in.

The ample foyer welcomes and diffuses the action...

Stay, meet, inspire and create – mostly at the dining and working area by the pool, powered by the fastest Wi-Fi connection in Tulum.

Protected by high external walls and the building itself, the entire building has a private and peaceful aura, drenched in natural light coming through the large windows and the courtyard.

Minimally furnished, the rooms are spacious, beautiful and soothing…

...and so are the bathrooms. The shy ones should know there isn’t a door separating both spaces.

Seamless hand-sculpted lighting and bedside stocked with purified water in glass bottles. There are absolutely no single use plastics in the hotel. Bravo, bravo, bravo!

Heavenly, pristine white linen bedsheets.

The cozy nook on the back of the common area feels private yet connected to the omnipresent creative flow.

Derek Klein traveled the Yucatan peninsula and beyond looking for genuine artifacts. These beautiful terracotta pieces are made by hand in the communities of Chiapas.

Sunset meditation on an empty rooftop.

The deep, long, beautiful salt water swimming pool is frequently visited by mermaids at night.

If James Turrell had a house in Tulum…he would probably still want to stay at Casa Pueblo.

The internal façade walls were kept in the same light color as the rooms’ interiors, creating a feeling of integration of all spaces.

Delightful rooftop music sessions.

The large pebbled patio can host cozy al fresco meals under the trees.

Lush life, happy life.

The landscape might inspire you to order the Mayan greens salad twice a day. Delicious.

Visiting the Cobá ruins with the legendary Don Miguel, who shared some juicy details of his ancestors stories. It looks like the Mayans loved a good party. And ball games followed by human sacrifices.

Sunset over the jungle atop Ixmoja, the 138 feet pyramid that is the center of the ancient town.

Tulum pueblo colors.

And yes, oh yes, the stunning beach.
Highs & Lows
The lush greenery.
The gorgeous architecture and interior design.
The inspiring people you’ll meet.
Dream bed: oversized and perfect-density mattress wrapped in luxurious Parachute white linen sheets.
The warmth and politeness of the staff.
The rooftop: great meditation spot and fun weekly music sessions.
The attention to detail that goes beyond aesthetics: I saw the owner get up from a dining table to assist travelers looking for information – and changed their outside plastic cup for a proper glass.
The main avenue location means a fair bit of noise, but nothing a good pair of ear plugs can't remedy. And the property is about to improve their window's insulation.
