"The sexiest stay in Berlin"

Set in the heart of Berlin’s Mitte, Château Royal is equal parts hotel, gallery, and gathering place. Spread across two historic buildings reimagined with contemporary flair, it holds 93 rooms filled with bespoke design, site-specific artworks, and a mood that’s as sophisticated as it is approachable. With a restaurant rooted in Mediterranean flavors, a cocktail bar that doubles as a salon for the city’s creative set, and partnerships that tie it to Berlin’s art, fashion, and cultural calendar, this is where Berlin’s past and present meet in style.

Highs & Lows

  • Château Royal’s art curation, led by Kirsten Kandwehr, is impressive and attuned with a greater contemporary art narrative. But what struck me since I first visited this lobby in 2022, is how the art collection helps build a robust hospitality narrative. The art is poignant, but it doesn’t steal the show. Instead, it dialogues with the spaces and what they are here for — to welcome and care for people — in a way that is just enough irreverent, just enough familiar.

  • The room felt like a dream. Exquisite materials, perfect lighting, ultra-high ceilings, quiet and comfortable to perfection.

  • The food. Oh, wow, the food. If you’re local or staying elsewhere in town, do not miss dining here (including brunch). Unless you go to their sister restaurant, the legendary Grill Royal. But, even so, try both.

  • The service. They master the art of being both present and discreet, attentive but never on your way, blending Berlin cool with real warmth.

  • August was a bit quiet on occupancy and local visitors. I’d love to return and see this magnificent place filled to the brim with life.

Important Bits

  • Type

    Art-centered lifestyle hotel

  • Vibe

Sexy, moody, artsy, elegant — with a sophistication that doesn’t tip into snobbery

  • Location

On a side street just off Unter den Linden, steps from the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island. You’re in the cultural and historical core of Berlin, yet the atmosphere inside is intimate enough to feel like you’ve slipped into a secret world.

  • Rooms

    93

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

The website is clear and simple, and the booking process has that frictionless elegance you want. Communication with the team was personal and efficient; even before arrival, it felt like I was stepping into a place that cared about its guests’ rhythm.

  • Future Forward

Natural latex mattresses, organic linens, vegan bath products, no plastics on sight. Partnerships with local creatives and collaborations with Berlin Fashion Week and Gallery Weekend, amongst other initiatives, make it part-hotel, part-cultural institution.

  • Music

A rotating soundtrack that mirrors the city: warm analog records in the bar, soft ambient tones in the rooms. And a very special music room that can be used for pocket shows and intimate gatherings.

  • Year Opened

    2022

  • Designed By

Irina Kromayer, Etienne Descloux and Katariina Minits

  • Health & Wellness

No wellness complex on site, but a weekly run club, seasonal rooftop classes and a partnership with Holmes Wellness Club that is a short stroll away and delivers sauna, pool, gym and high-intensity classes.

  • Food

Restaurant Château Royal is Mediterranean-inspired, seasonal, and unfussy in the best way. A wine list heavy on Burgundy and grower Champagne, herringbone parquet floors underfoot, mint-green walls, and art on the walls — everything staged for long, delicious evenings. Unmissable.

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

The bar is pure theater, with cocktails like a Negroni sous vide that are clever but never gimmicky. The spaces were quiet in August but I know that during major moment like the Berlinale or Berlin Art Week, the hotel turns into a living salon — dealers, artists, and editors all orbiting under the same moody glow.

  • Minibar & Retail

Minibar is limited in most rooms, a conscious choice that invites the guests to engage with — and be pleased by — the hotel’s services. Local touches — Bonanza coffee, P&T teas, and Saint Charles Apothecary bath products — keep the the shelves feeling curated, not generic. Château Royal’s merch, on display by the front desk, had several items I wanted to bring home, including T-shirts in partnership with former Vogue Germany editor Angelica Blechschmidt’s archive.

  • Accessibility

Elevators and level flooring throughout the main areas. Some historic rooms may present challenges, but the staff is thoughtful and solutions-oriented.

  • Pet Friendly

Yes. And one of the reasons why Iove this city so much is because our furry pals are just sincerely welcome (almost) everywhere.

  • Children

    Yes

  • Price

Berlin is known for its hotels’ prices being on the lower end compared to other European capitals. Considering the caliber of this stay, the rates are an incredible deal.
