The Highliner Hotel
- Where:
- Why:Visiting family in my second hometown
- When:July 2026
- Who:The whole family (of 3)
"Sleek new nautical in America's oldest fishing town "
This is what a seaside stay looks like reimagined for the digital age. Eleven rooms fill this 1860s brick landmark on Gloucester’s Main Street; one of the first raised in brick after the town’s great fire, now done up in navy polish with walk-in showers and an AI concierge on call for champagne. Rocky Neck’s galleries, the harbor, and the best restaurants in Cape Ann are steps for minutes away.
Highs & Lows
-
The location is just the best in town for walking around. There are other beach-front spots, or more outdoor space, but it's special to walk right out on to Main Street with Gloucester Harbor at your feet
-
Communication/efficiency. Given it's a human-less, tech-run hotel, the details were pretty seamless. Immediate responses to requests, consistent (and preemptive) contact about parking, local details, etc. When our room ran out of teabags, I was real-time instructed to go get more in the supply closet they unlocked remotely and monitored. Eerie, but effective
-
Pristine new decor. Matouk throws, beautiful bathrooms, spotless upholstery, design-y details
-
Loved the crispy cold water filter dispenser in the entry. Why don't more hotels do this? So simple
-
Appreciate the effort to incorporate local businesses (Castaways breakfast vouchers, Saltwater Massage)
-
I get the new AI-hotel trend (self-check in, digital concierge, et al) but sometimes the lack of humanity was too much. I was grateful to see super-sweet housekeeping in the hallways just to connect. Likewise, the phone operator was friendly and warm. Any time there was a human involved, it was a bonus
-
While you can see they've made an effort to make everything trendy and beautiful, it feels like less attention was paid to comfort. Lighting was awkward, (all on or off overheads were the only option downstairs in the loft room); the fire alarm was directly over our pillows and flashed neon green all night; the curtains on the floor-to-ceiling windows were pretty, but either closed (pitch black) or open to the streetlights outside. I would have liked to see the touch of a human in the space. The non-loft rooms are smaller but cozier!
Important Bits
-
Type
"Digital boutique" tech-hotel (but make it nautical)
-
Vibe
Very polished but impersonal. It's a point of pride for The Highliner and the whole concept, so this is just me, but at times it felt like a hotel for beautiful robots
-
Location
Prime location in the middle of town, just above Gloucester Harbor
-
Rooms
11, including two-story loft rooms
-
Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience
The digital concierge and self check-in had no hiccups. They called me ahead of time to review parking (none onsite but they explain the metered street parking or public lot situation). Very useful to have a call prior to arrival if you don't know the area
-
Future Forward
Glassware in rooms with a community water filter dispenser downstairs, recycling. Curious to see where the world goes when "Future Forward" doesn't just mean new tech :)
-
Music
The rooms were pretty soundproofed and the hallways filtered electronical/pop sounds AM and PM. It felt appropriate
-
Year Opened
March 2026
-
Designed By
The building is from the 1860s, one of the first built in brick after Gloucester's historic fire burnt down much of the town. Refurbed after it was purchased in 2023 into the glossy digi-space it is today -- lush navy rooms, painstaking design moments
-
Health & Wellness
Nothing onsite. It was summer, so went to the beach! Guests get exclusive offers at the nearby Saltwater Massage Studio
-
Food
The digital concierge will bring you a charcuterie or fruit board, even champagne service. BIG PERK: you'll get a breakfast voucher for Castaways Vintage Cafe across the street, one of my favorites. They have the best smoothies
-
Bar, Events & Nightlife
All of Main Street and the rest of Gloucester is a stroll or short drive away
-
Minibar & Retail
Coffee/tea in room, lots of branded merch (candles, robes, pajamas, throws, totes) available digitally and they'll drop it off. Keep an eye on the time when making requests so you don't miss drop-off windows
-
Accessibility
Elevators from the sidewalk entry, roll-in showers in some rooms
-
Pet Friendly
Service animals only please
-
Children
Yes. Sloane adored sleeping on the sofa sectional on the first floor of our loft, and the little stuffed lobster they left for her. No cots or cribs available, so bring yours if needed
-
Price
I think the value matches the price, especially for a prime location in this area where rates can skyrocket in summer

Gloucester is the oldest fishing community in the country; it's where they filmed the real-life story of The Perfect Storm, and the saltiness is everywhere. One of four towns in Cape Ann, Massachusetts - each one with its own charm. The Highliner is right in the middle of Main Street in the village, surrounded by restaurants, shops and the harbor just down the hill
