The Middle House

with Alex Catarinella
  • Where:Shanghai

  • Why:My last stop on a brilliant trip in Asia by Cathay Pacific Airways and its sister company, The House Collective of Swire Hotels.

  • When:Late June 2018.

  • Who:Me!

Highs & Lows

  • Is this a real question? Everything. The Middle House is the definition of a five star hotel.

  • The immaculately-designed lobby. (The art. The furniture. The zen vibes. Etc.) Actually, everything about the lobby. But especially the CHANDELIER.

  • All three restaurants are seriously sublime. I’m still full.

  • The bar at Café Gray Deluxe is liiiit at night. Really good fashionable people watching. Go out onto the terrace and get your drink on with the fashion-y cuties while taking in/Instagramming the breathtaking Shanghai skyline.

  • The food at all three restaurants = phenomenal.

  • Fantastic and very thoughtful service. Thank you for the plates of lychee!

  • MAJORLY STOCKED MINI-BAR!

  • The Bamford exclusively for The House Collective toiletries are sooo good. AND natural and Artisan made!

  • WALK-IN CLOSET!!

  • Location, location, location! (The biggest Starbucks in the world is a two minute walk away, if that’s your thing. Really cool Instagram-friendly building, tbh.)

  • A perfect bathtub/rain shower, and, holy shit, that heavenly bed.

  • I got a great facial at the MI XUN spa. And I had my fat vacuumed away in the HYPOXI room whilst clad in one of their cupping-suction suits.

  • THE POOL!!

  • Having to check out. :’(

Important Bits

  • Type

    Luxury Boutique.

  • Vibe

Modern, lavish, sophisticated with a mix of Shanghainese design elements. A sanctuary from the Shanghai hustle and bustle!

  • Location

Its majesticness is located in the Jing’an District and the city's trendy Nanjing West Road.

  • Rooms

111 modern studios plus a gallery suite and a top-floor Penthouse all of which feature incredible city views.

  • Music

Classy, jazzy numbers in the lobby.

  • Year Opened

Soft opening was in April 2018!

  • Designed By

Lauded Italian designer and architect Piero Lissoni.

  • Pool/Gym

Spectacular indoor heated pool. Fantastic gym. Plus, a spa, a juice bar, a sauna, and more, all on the same futuristic-meets-zen-designed floor! Oh, and a HYPOXI ROOM where you can vacuum the fat away!

  • Restaurant

Three fantastic restaurants. Café Gray Deluxe = European yummy dishes, fantastic cocktails, great space. Just as great as the Café Gray Deluxe at The Upper House in Hong Kong. Frasca = Italian restaurant with to-die-for dishes brought to life by Chef Stefano Pace. Ingredients sourced fresh from local family farms. Great cocktails, wine and Italian beers. Sui Tang Li = SO GOOD Chinese restaurant (with its name aptly meaning “happy, free and relaxed”). Chef Tony Yet, who has more than 20 years’ experience, serves the best of artisan Dim Sum. A menu featuring contemporary dishes influenced by Shanghainese, Sichuan and Cantonese regional cuisines. It’s a mouth-watering must.

  • Bar

Yes, at all three restaurants. In the evening at Café Gray Deluxe, the crowd is quite hip and fun. In the summer, I suggest drinking it up on the lovely terrace. (Reminder: CITY VIEWS.)

  • Minibar

Fully stocked. Lots of alcohol options…!

  • Wifi

    Of Course.

  • Children

I hate them but if you must.

  • Price

Expected prices from a newly-opened five-star hip-as-hell hotel in one of the best cities in the world.

There’s sooo much to see. I highly suggest booking a tour from Bespoke Travel Company. (Sam was my tour guide and he was fantastic!). Lovely people who know their Shanghai history (and where to grab those authentic bites!). And most importantly, you’ll feel super in the know post-tour

K-Beauty store/heaven a few blocks away. Who doesn’t love a post-plane sheet mask?

You won’t feel like a tourist at all in this hidden gem -- it’s located in the basement of an apartment building. It exhibits posters from the Maoist period of communist China. Really interesting and a highlight of my trip. Great gift shop.
