The Portrait Bar

Highs & Lows

  • Amenities! I have a new appreciation for traveling with a child and the hotel team helped us get in early, gave us a late check out and left little surprises every night for our daughter. There was a fully stocked complimentary mini bar, a complimentary house car and butler services. We didn’t use these offerings but they were made available several times if we had wanted to!

  • Design…an experience of its own. The hand painted wallpaper, bold color palette and infusion of texture through material and art was truly unique. Hotel design can sometimes feel like an afterthought however here it was the main event creating a beautiful backdrop to an impeccable hotel

  • Location! I made it to Dumbo in 15 minutes one morning for work and then to Central Lark by train the next day in equal time

Important Bits

  • Type

    Luxury lifestyle design hotel!

  • Vibe

Hand-painted wallpaper and colorful tapestries highlight Martin Brudnizki's restoration. Velvet, silk tassels, and electric objects round out the immersive experience. The designer's inspiration pulls from the property’s history and owner Alex Ohebshalom’s travels through Marrakech, Laos, and Myanmar. The result is an ornate infusion of color and exotic decor in a bright, calm environment

  • Location

    Properly central in NoMad

  • Rooms

153 rooms across the historic mansion and modern tower

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

Booking was a breeze! We were already in town for a family wedding and had to extend for my work so I booked our room the night before requesting an early check. They graciously accommodated our daughter’s nap schedule

  • Future Forward

Strong focus on longevity in design with curated, high quality materials that will resist unnecessary updates. The spaces are designed to last decades, reducing their carbon footprint and avoiding disposable luxury fads

  • Music

Light and fresh filtering from the lobby through the elevators and into your hallway. After the hustle and bustle the music felt like a sensory sanctuary hitting all the right notes

  • Year Opened

    Built in 1856–59, re-opened in 2023

  • Designed By

The entire hotel experience was designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (the iconic firm behind Annabel’s London, Fouquet’s Hotel and Belmond Splendido in Portofino). His signature blend of texture, tapestry and artwork create such a unique visually immersive guest stay, unlike any other I’ve had. You can feel whimsical historical references to the architecture as well as a brilliantly curated love affair for the rich dynamic and diverse beauty of New York

  • Health & Wellness

There’s a beautiful boutique 24H private gym as well as access to a nearby larger facility. The stand out moment is their Clé de Peau Beauté Suite offering highly tailored and customizable skincare treatments

  • Food

The in-room dining was great! We were also given a beautiful tray of welcome cookies and treats with edible flowers that were all baked in house

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

The hotel offers a salon like bar culture and they do it very well. The portrait bar is bustling with buzzy guests drinking beautiful bespoke cocktails inspired by global destinations created by bar director Darryl Chan. Their dedication to mixology extends to in room options in a thoughtful and fun way

  • Minibar & Retail

The mini bar was stocked with snacks and beverages as well as a nonalcoholic champagne that they brought to us on our last night with complimentary turn down service. The mini bar was included which is always a really nice offering!

  • Accessibility

The hotel is fully ADA compliant with roll in street access and wide lobby doors

  • Pet Friendly

Yes! Including pet amenities “Suite Tails” pet packages available on demand

  • Children

Absolutely and I would recommend this hotel to traveling families. Housekeeping left small toys and plushies for our daughter each night and made an extra effort to make her smile during our stay. Very thoughtful and accommodating in my opinion!

  • Price

The property is pricey but they were offering a promotion for booking a third night for free when we stayed which made the rate more reasonable for us!
