"An English country escape in the Hamptons"
Baker House 1650 stands defiant as development modernizes the East End’s hotel scene. Sea captain Daniel Howe built the farmhouse in 1648. James Harper Poor purchased it in 1899 and hired architect Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe to reimagine in the Arts and Crafts style. Antonella Bertello, from a Peruvian-Italian real estate family, acquired the property in the early 2000s, and the 21st century upgrade didn’t sacrifice a drop of historic charm. Disappear behind the hotel’s iconic Hamptons hedgerows for an idyllic country escape.
Highs & Lows
-
The interiors. Straight out of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Case in point: the historic core of the home, where mullioned bay windows cast soft light onto the floral upholstery and a wood-burning fireplace with a checkerboard-patterned tile surround.
-
The grounds. Ultra-tall hedgerows act as a buffer between Main Street and the hotel’s private grounds. Behind them, an in-ground pool and sunloungers on the grass beckon, while walking paths wind beneath ancient ginkgo trees.
-
The spa. One or two people max can book the subterranean private spa, complete with a heated pool and therapy rooms.
-
The afternoon tea. The English tradition lives on with tea sandwiches, premium Plain T, and Ferrari Brut Trento DOC.
-
The ceiling. If you’re 6’2” like me, you’ll have to duck in the breakfast room, the low-ceilinged core of the original 17th-century farmhouse.
-
No two rooms are alike — different design, decor, layout throughout. Garden views are limited to rooms in back; only two have terraces. If you spot one you see on social, book ahead or risk landing somewhere else.
