Eastwind Oliverea Valley

"A design-forward Scandinavian cabin retreat deep in the Catskills "

With the Esopus Creek running beside the property and the mountains closing in around the valley, Eastwind Oliverea Valley has the freedom of a very good summer camp, plus Scandinavian cabins, Mid-Century furniture, excellent linens and cocktails in the timber pavilion. There’s a heated outdoor pool framed by forest, hammocks, bikes and complimentary s’mores at the communal fire pit every night. I spent an August weekend here with my son Henri and our dog Grover, and it’s the place to let go of the plan.

Highs & Lows

  • Feeling completely immersed in nature. The hotel quickly felt like home, but with the mountains, creek and open field always present around us

  • Watching the stars and drawing and making art with Henri on our sweeping private porch overlooking the field

  • Playing chess with Henri in the main pavilion—one of those simple, unplanned moments I will remember most

  • The service was amazing: warm, personal and delivered by a staff who felt as though they genuinely cared about their guests

  • Seeing Grover run with real freedom, completely at one with the land. Everyone loved him, and his happiness became a major highlight for all of us

  • Hunter wells on loan for when the weather takes you off guard

  • The heated pool, lawns, hammocks and communal s'mores gave Henri his own world without a schedule or children's-club atmosphere, while I still had the design, quiet and sense of place I wanted

  • Make sure to close your cabin doors quickly: bugs and gnats can enter in an instant and are difficult to get rid of. I wish there had been a sign or a mention at check-in

  • Getting into bed in the pitched-roof mezzanine of the cabin was not always easy, and I may have banged my head once or twice

  • For children who are picky eaters, the restaurant is not ideal: during our stay, the kitchen could not make a simple kids' dish, so bring a few reliable provisions or plan an alternative

Important Bits

  • Type

    Polished rural retreat

  • Vibe

A breath of fresh air: a Scandinavian-inspired nature hotel with a knack for design and wellness.

  • Location

    Authentically Hudson Valley remote

  • Rooms

    26 rooms and cabins

  • Pre-Arrival & Arrival Experience

Eastwind has several hotels, but Oliverea Valley is in a part of the Catskills that feels quieter and more remote; an authentic connection to the landscape. Be warned: there is little to no cell service in the valley, and we got lost on the way. It's on McKenley Hollow Road, but there was no visible sign from the road when we arrived, which was confusing. Still, missing the turn led us to a creek where Henri, Grover and I stopped to wade in the water -- a reminder that sometimes getting lost is how you discover something new

  • Future Forward

The sustainability story here is quiet but strong; with compact timber buildings and natural materials. House bikes, locally sourced and seasonal cooking, forage-based experiences and a focus on enjoying the landscape without excessive programming all point toward a lower-impact way of staying. I would love to see them share specifics about its energy, water and waste practices, but the overall philosophy feels connected to the land

  • Music

Low-key and atmospheric—music that supports the timber, cocktails and evening light

  • Year Opened

    Early 2023

  • Designed By

Interiors individually curated by Eastwind co-founder and creative director Julija Stoliarova, drawing on Scandinavian restraint and Mid-Century vintage design

  • Health & Wellness

An all-season heated outdoor pool, two freestanding Scandinavian-style dry saunas, a seasonal cold-plunge bucket, an infrared light room, hammocks and complimentary bikes. The McKenley Hollow Trail begins at the foot of the property, with Giant Ledge only a short drive away

  • Food

Dandelion serves an evolving menu of locally sourced, international comfort food, with a relaxed seasonal poolside lunch on summer weekends. The setting suit adults beautifully (Families with picky eaters should plan ahead, as the kitchen could not make us a simple children's dish)

  • Bar, Events & Nightlife

No nightlife at the hotel beyond drinks at Dandelion and evenings around the fire, which suited us perfectly. Ralph's Bar & Bowling down the road has two old-school bowling lanes, drinks and a wonderfully time-warped Catskills atmosphere. Eastwind itself feels ideal for a small wedding or intimate event. The Glasshouse can host private dinners, wellness retreats, yoga or fitness classes and creative workshops, plus experiences (foraging, cocktail classes, candle-making)

  • Minibar & Retail

The cabin mini fridge is very useful! The most memorable provisions are experiential: complimentary s'mores kits, Hunter rain boots guests can borrow and Grover's welcome. He loved the treats

  • Accessibility

Property grounds and outdoor spaces partially accessible, call ahead for specifics. Select guesthouse rooms are ADA, but cabin and sauna access will be limited. The main pavilion, Dandelion and common areas are ADA-friendly

  • Pet Friendly

Yes. Woof! Grover was not simply tolerated—he was welcomed, fussed over by everyone and given treats when we arrived. Watching him run with such freedom was one of the great pleasures of the stay. Dogs are $50 per pet/night

  • Children

Absolutely perfect for them. The pool, lawn, cabins, hammocks and s'mores create freedom without being a conventional resort feel. Yes, cribs; no, cots

  • Price

Rates vary by room type and season; expect roughly $259 and up, with larger cabins and high-demand weekends costing more.

Oliverea Valley sits deeper in the Catskills near the Big Indian Wilderness, surrounded by forested peaks, trailheads and the Esopus Creek. It feels properly removed from city life, yet Phoenicia, Belleayre Mountain and some of the region's best swimming holes and hikes are within driving distance.
