Tokyo: Claska Hotel

by: Kate Atkinson

  • Why:

Vacation (And breaking my Nippon virginity).

  • When:

    April 2013

  • Who:

    My London-based gal pal/guru Rose & I.

Important Bits

  • Type:

Design Hotel and a dang trendy one at that.

  • Rooms:

15 unique rooms and a little dog (grooming parlour) too!

  • Pool/Gym:

    Zip and zilch.

  • Restaurant:

Claska Restaurant & Bar with varied seasonal menus with western fare. And Kiokuh – Japanese contemporary dining with banging brown rice and to nosh taunt your five senses. Healthy, quintessentially Japanese and oh so tasty.

  • Bar:

Yes, with a cocktail list Gatsby himself would be proud of.

  • Year Opened:

A revamp of what was originally Hotel Meguro in 2003 with an overhaul in 2008.

  • Wifi:

  • Vibe:

Industrial & conceptual Japan minimalist cool.

  • Music:

    Ambient & hip hop

  • Children:

Bring them and leave them in the dog parlour for grooming.

  • Location:

In decidedly hip Meguro, nestled among the city’s coolest design stores and a hipster-well-heeled hood.

  • Designed By:

English design whizzes Tomato, with rooms by a gaggle of Japanese designers and up and comers.

  • Best Way to Book:
  • Price:

Design hotel heaven that won’t empty your coin purse. And it ain’t no pretentious Park Hyatt either.

Highs + Lows

  • Dogman – A dog grooming salon, decked out with kitsch and crazy dark décor to boot, in the heart of hyperactive, neon, pulsing, vibing Tokyo - almost wished I was canine.

  • Do The Claska shop & gallery– Sickeningly trendy and helpful. Every intricate and handicrafted item you have ever wanted. Heaving with chopsticks, artisan Japanese bowls and fabrics, with some Aesop products and hipster pencil cases to boot.

  • Tokyo by Tokyo – Who doesn’t love a hotel with a paperback bespoke guidebook that shits all over Superfuture? Designed by in the know Tokyo hip squad, who know every damn back alley in the business.

  • Woulda loved an exhibition while I was there – but I’m really clutching at straws now.

  • Addition of a gym with WII interactive exercise tools would catapult this hotel to full marks.

  • Night room service delivery by Johnny Depp look alikes could help?
